Propane Generators

The Pros and Cons of a Propane Powered Generator

Propane generators, like any of the other generator fuel types, have their advantages and disadvantages.

Propane is an excellent fuel thanks to some of its properties. Due to its low boiling point of -44 degrees Fahrenheit (-42.2 Celsius) there are no problems regarding vaporization of the fuel.

It can also be stored for long periods of time which is useful in case the generator is used occasionally. As it is a gaseous fuel the generator runs smoothly and very quietly. The emissions of a propane engine are low compared to either gas or diesel powered engines.

Most of the diesel generators face a problem called "wet stacking". When the generator is running on a load of about 30% to 40%, the fuel is not burnt completely and it lines up the turbocharger and other areas.

Wet stacking is not a problem in a propane powered generator due to its gaseous nature.

The main disadvantages of a propane powered generator are its lower life span (when compared to diesels) and high running costs.

The amount of fuel required is about 3 times the amount required by a diesel generator for the same energy output. Much of this has to do witht he fact that a diesel generator typically runs at a much slower RPM rate.

Finally there is always a slim chance danger of fuel leaking and igniting.

Comparing the above mentioned points, here are the...

Advantages:

  • Clean Burning fuel
  • Readily available in small and large sized tanks.
  • Lesser noise emissions from the engine
  • The initial cost is lesser compared to diesel powered generators
  • No problem of wet stacking because of a gaseous fuel
  • Available as air cooled and liquid cooled variants
  • Ideal for intermittent use with quick start and stop time

The Disadvantages:

  • Relatively expensive fuel
  • Life expectancy is less when compared to a diesel (longer life when compared to a gas generator)
  • Presence of a pressurized tank of inflammable gas poses a threat of explosion
  • Dangerous consequences in case of a gas leak
  • Cost of the fuel plumbing system is high
  • Higher fuel consumption and lesser fuel efficiency*

Propane powered generators are a very good choice for a small scale or domestic use. Unlike diesel engines they can be switched on and off intermittently as per the user need.

They are also small and portable and therefore can be easily fixed onto your recreational vehicle or used as a power source on a jobsite for welding and other purposes. The environmental impact of a propane generator is minimal and emissions are less.

Propane generators also provide an excellent option for buyers in cold regions as the fuel does not gel up like diesel and starts almost immediately.

Using a propane powered generator as one of the main power sources is not recommended as running a gas generator for long intervals of time reduces the engine life drastically.

On the whole propane is a good fuel choice for the buyer who wishes to utilize his generator for temporary power outages or as a source in a recreational vehicle.
