Yanmar is a Japanese company that was founded in 1912. Yanmar America has been in existance for more than thirty years, starting with a small sales office in 1979. Now, located in Adairsville, Georgia, they have more than 500,000 square feet of office, warehouse, and manufacturing space.
Yanmar is known for their small utility tractors, compact construction equipment, and of course, both marine and industrial diesel generators.
Their engines, generators and drive systems are in some of today's most prestigious yacht designs.
Perhaps one of their most popular product lines is there strong and dependable line of Yanmar diesel generator. These generators can supply emergency power to your home or business.
Two of their newest generators are small and portable diesel generators, the model YDG5500, and the YDG3700. Both are available at a low cost, with a full manufacturer's 2 year or 2,000-hour warranty.
These portable diesel generators run quietly, have a low vibration, and feature either recoil or electric starting.
They are both open frame models with U shaped frames. The YDG5500 is a 5,500-watt peak generator with continuous 5,000 watts of power; the YDG3700 provides 3,700 watts of peak and 3,500 watts continuous power.
The YDG5500 uses just .40 gallons of fuel per hour, and provides 41.7 Amps for 120V operations, and up to 20.8Amps for 240V applications. At the maximum continuous output, it rates at 85 decibels at 7 meters.
This model has a 3.4-gallon diesel fuel tank. It operates at 60 hertz and has tandem NFB 22A circuit breakers. The YDG5500 is equipped with the Yanmar L100V6 GY diesel engine.
The GDY3700 utilizes the Yanmar L70V6-GY diesel engine, producing 29.2 Amps at 120 Volts, 14.6 at 240 Volts. It draws .27 gallons of fuel per hour and has a 3.4-gallon diesel fuel tank. This model comes with tandem NFB-16A circuit breakers. It produces just 82 decibels at seven meters when running at continuous draw outputs.
These are the differences between the two models. There are also many of the same features for each model. Both of them are a type two revolving field generator. Both have self-excitation, as well as an electric start with back up recoil starter.
They both have air-cooled motors. Both also have an automatic voltage regulator that provides the highest amount of voltage to applications no matter what, whether at 120 or 240 volts.
Each model also has a 12v DC outlet, so that you can charge up boat, RV or vehicle batteries at the same time you are using AC current.
Both of the YDG-S engines can go from 6-15 hours on a single fill up, depending on load. This is because they are direct injection engines, which is a major difference between these and other generators of their size.
Between their large capacity fuel tanks, and the high efficiency of the motors, you can fill up the tank at dusk and not have to refill until the next morning.
Both units are compact and lightweight compared to other models, allowing them to be transported and stored easier. On both sizes of generator, the engines as well that unit itself is mounted on inclined rubber blocks. This significantly reduces overall vibrations both horizontally as well as vertically.
Noise levels are also significantly reduced on several levels, at the intake, throughout the combustion system, as well as from highly sophisticated muffler.
One of the nicest features of both these Yanmar diesel generators is the safety shut down. When the oil level gets too low, an alarm sounds and the unit shuts down to prevent damage. The muffler is enclosed and it has a recessed control panel, all ensuring safety.
There are fewer parts to maintain, and adjusting and inspection are a simple process. The motor is pressure lubricated, all offering the highest materials and great durability of both units.
The Yanmar YDG3700 is priced at $3,096, and the YDG5500 costs $3,893. While some may think that this may be a little high for a portable generator, considering it is a diesel motor, and has the rugged durability that are unavailable in many of its competitors, plus the long warranty, it is a good buy.
